The dog breed name "bulldog" started around the 1500s in various literature which started to be spelled as Bondogge and Bolddogge. It was in the 1600s, that its modern spelling was first mentioned.
It is believed that these breed were a result of a cross breed between the Pug, Mastiff, and a breed of a Spanish dog.
These dogs used to be breed for bull baiting which is a form of entertainment where the dog would try to immobilize a bull, explaining the "bull" name applied to them.
